Salawat on Isra’ and Mi‘raj

Salawat on Isra’ and Mi‘raj
The mashāyikh (spiritual masters) who compose salawāt (invocations of blessings on Prophet Muhammad, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) usually make a mention of Mi‘rāj (his Heavenly Ascension) in their salawāt. Shaykh ‘Abdul Jalīl bin ‘Azūm (Rahmatullāhi ‘alayh) has perhaps composed the greatest number of salawāt on Isrā’ and Mi‘rāj. His book of salawāt Tanbīh al-Anām (Exhorting Mankind) has more than 10,000 salawāt of which more than 500 are on Isrā’ and Mi‘rāj. Three full chapters are on Isrā’ and Mi‘rāj. These are titled:

* Bāb fi’l Mi‘rāj wa Matla‘i Nūrihi’l Wahhāj

(The Chapter on the Prophet’s Heavenly Ascension and the Dawn of his Brilliant Light).

* Bāb fīma khussa bihi fi’l Isrā’ wa mā ra’ā min Āyāti Rabbihi’l Kubrā

(The Chapter about what is Special about him in his Night Journey and the Great Signs of his Lord which he saw).

* Bāb fī marāīhi’l ‘ayniyya wa ‘uluwwi maqālatihi’l marwiyyah

(The Chapter on what he saw with his eyes and its exaltation in written narratives).

The first salāt in the chapter on Mi‘rāj is:

Allāhumma salli wa sallim ‘alā Sayyidinā wa Mawlānā Muhammad-in
wa ‘alā āli Sayyidinā Muhammad-in
alladhī malaAllāhu qalbahu hikmatan wa īmānā

O Allāh! Bless and bestow peace on our Master and Patron Sayyidinā Muhammad
and on the Family of Sayyidinā Muhammad
whose heart Allāh filled with wisdom and faith.

Each salāt begins with the invocation of blessings:

Allāhumma salli wa sallim ‘alā Sayyidinā wa Mawlānā Muhammad-in
wa ‘alā āli Sayyidinā Muhammad-in.

This is followed by the conclusion of the salāt such as:

Alladhī shaqqa Jibrīlu qalbahu wa khatam wa ghasalahu bi māi zamzam
Whose heart Sayyidinā Jibrīl opened, washed it with the water of zamzam and sealed.

Alladhī usriya bihi min al-Masjid’l Harāmi ila’l Masjidi’l Aqsā
Who went with him on a Night Journey from Masjid al-Harām to Masjid al-Aqsā.

Alladhī salla bi Bayti’l Maqdis
The one who prayed in Bayti’l Maqdis.

Alladhī usriya bihi birrūhi wa’l jasad
One who went on the Night Journey with body and soul.

Alladhī ra’ā mā lam yarahu min al-anbiyāi ahad
Who saw what no other Prophet had seen.

Alladhī ra’ā min āyāti Rabbihi’l kubrā
Who saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord.

Alladhī zujja bihi fi’n-nūr
Who was covered with the Light.

Alladhī rufi‘a lahu Baytu’l Ma‘mūr
Who ascended up to Bayt al-Ma‘mūr.

Alladhī qaruba ilā qābi qawsayn
Who drew near until he was at a distance of two bow lengths.

Alladhī huwa laysa ‘ala’l ghaybi bizanīn
Who does not withhold the knowledge of the unseen.

Alladhī tamanna’l Kalīmu bi ‘uluwwi rutbatihi an yakūna min ummatihi
In whose Ummah, the one who talked with Allāh (Nabī Mūsā ‘Alayhissalām) wished to be, seeing his exalted status.

Alladhi’fturidat ‘alayhi’l khamsu salawāt fawqas-sab‘i samāwāt
On whom the daily five times Prayer was made obligatory (when he was) above the seven heavens.

The first section of the first chapter on Mi‘rāj in Tanbīh al-Anām ends with this salāt together with the appropriate verse from the Holy Qur’ān.

Allāhumma salli wa sallim ‘alā Sayyidinā wa Mawlānā Muhammad-in
wa ‘alā āli Sayyidinā Muhammad-in
al-ma‘niyyi bi Qawlihi ‘Azza wa Jalla
bayānan wa nassan
Subhānalladhī asrā bi ‘Abdihī laylan min al-Masjidi’l Harāmi ila’l Masjidi’l Aqsā.

O Allāh! Bless and bestow peace on our Master and Patron Sayyidinā Muhammad
and on the Family of Sayyidinā Muhammad
who is referred to clearly in the text (of the Qur’an)
in the Words of Allāh, The Mighty and The Majestic:
Glorified is He Who carried His Special Devotee on a journey by night from the Sacred Masjid (in Makka) to Masjid al-Aqsā (in Jerusalem). (17:1).

Tradition has it that when our Beloved Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) was in the Presence of Allāh, he greeted him with Attahiyyātu.

Allāh responded with:
As-salāmu ‘alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa Rahmatullāhi wa Barakātuhu
Peace be upon you, O Prophet! And the Mercy of Allāh and His Blessings.

The Prophet (Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa Sallam), remembering his Ummah responded with:
As-salāmu ‘alaynā wa ‘alā ‘Ibādillāhi’s-sālihīn
Peace be on us and on all the righteous servants of Allāh.

The angels who heard this responded with the Tashahhud (Testimony of Faith).

Tradition also has it that the Prophet (Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) received the last three verses of Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:284-286) on Mi‘rāj.

Shaykh ‘Abdul Jalīl bin ‘Azūm has captured all this in the following salawāt.

Allāhumma salli wa sallim ‘alā Sayyidinā wa Mawlānā Muhammad-in
wa ‘alā āli Sayyidinā Muhammad-in
alladhī Alhamahullāhu bi-fadlihī
lammā ahabbahu wa’rtadāh an qāla
Attahiyyātu’l Mubārakātus-Salawātut-Tayyibātu Lillāhi

O Allāh! Bless and bestow peace on our Master and Patron Sayyidinā Muhammad
and on the Family of Sayyidinā Muhammad
whom Allāh inspired through His Grace
as He loved him and was pleased with him to say:
All reverence, benedictions, Prayers and sanctity are for Allāh only.

Allāhumma salli wa sallim ‘alā Sayyidinā wa Mawlānā Muhammad-in
wa ‘alā āli Sayyidinā Muhammad-in
alladhī Hayyāhullāhu Jallat Sifātuh bi Qawlihi
As-salāmu ‘alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa Rahmatullāhi wa Barakātuh

O Allāh! Bless and bestow peace on our Master and Patron Sayyidinā Muhammad
and on the Family of Sayyidinā Muhammad
whom Allāh, Majestic are His Attributes, greeted with these Words:
Peace be upon you, O Prophet! And the Mercy of Allāh and His Blessings.

Allāhumma salli wa sallim ‘alā Sayyidinā wa Mawlānā Muhammad-in
wa ‘alā āli Sayyidinā Muhammad-in
alladhī lam yansa bifadlihi ikhwānahu’l mu’minīn an qāla
As-salāmu ‘alaynā wa ‘alā ‘Ibādillāhis-sālihīn

O Allāh! Bless and bestow peace on our Master and Patron Sayyidinā Muhammad
and on the Family of Sayyidinā Muhammad
who in his graciousness did not forget his brother believers when he said:
Peace be on us and on all the righteous servants of Allāh.

Allāhumma salli wa sallim ‘alā Sayyidinā wa Mawlānā Muhammad-in
wa ‘alā āli Sayyidinā Muhammad-in
alladhī Athnallāhu ‘alayhi bi qawlihi
‘indakhtisāsihi bi-qurbih:
Āmanar-Rasūlu bi-mā unzila ilayhi min Rabbih

O Allāh! Bless and bestow peace on our Master and Patron Sayyidinā Muhammad
and on the Family of Sayyidinā Muhammad
whom Allāh praised most highly with these Words
when He especially chose him for His nearness :
The Prophetic Messenger believed in what has been revealed to him from his Lord. (2:285)

Allāhumma salli wa sallim ‘alā Sayyidinā wa Mawlānā Muhammad-in
wa ‘alā āli Sayyidinā Muhammad-in
alladhī bādarati’l Malāikatu bi-qawlihim
lammā ‘alimū annahu Habībuhu wa Khalīluh:
Ash-hadu an lā ilāha Illallāhu
Wahdahu lā sharīka lahu
wa ash-hadu anna Muhammad-an ‘Abduhū wa Rasūluh

O Allāh! Bless and bestow peace on our master and Patron Sayyidinā Muhammad
and on the Family of Sayyidinā Muhammad
who was immediately testified to by the angels
when they came to know that he was truly Allāh’s Beloved and his Friend
that each one of them declared:
I bear witness that none is to be worshipped but Allāh.
He is One. He has no partner.
And I bear witness that Muhammad is His Special Devotee and His Prophetic Messenger.

May Allāh (Subhānahu wa Ta‘ālā) raise the darajāt (spiritual stature) of Shaykh ‘Abdul Jalīl bin ‘Azūm for giving us the At-tahiyyātu in salawāt. Having recited these few salawāt, perhaps we have been spiritually rejuvenated to aspire to recite the whole of his Tanbīh al-Anām. And if we do that, we will surely realize how much the sūfī masters love our Beloved Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa Sallam).

Sallū ‘alan Nabī
Allāhumma salli wa sallim ‘alayh

Invoke (Allāh’s) blessings on Prophet Muhammad!
May Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him.

Al Fatiha
